Milwaukee Brewers star reliever Devin Williams is back to his usual form. After suffering his first blown save of the season in last week’s painful loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, Williams showed up in fine form Wednesday night to help the Brewers score a 5-3 victory at home over the San Francisco Giants.
Devin Williams rebounds in a big way in a win against the Giants
With the Brewers holding just a two-run lead at the top of the ninth inning, Williams was called upon to finish the night. Williams obliged, as he proceeded to go 1-2-3 to shut the door on the Giants. He got Mike Yastrzemski to fly out after three pitches. Williams then struck out Thairo Estrada in five pitches. Lastly, Williams retired Grant McCray on a flyout in three pitches.
With another outstanding job on the mound, Williams earned his sixth save of the season while improving his numbers to 2.79 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. On the season, Williams has limited opposing hitters to just a .171 batting average.
Williams’ return to form was indeed a welcome sight for the Brewers. In the loss to the Cardinals, Williams left fans concerned when he allowed three walks and earned two runs in just two-thirds of an inning to blow a save, but as he showed on Wednesday, there’s nothing to be extremely worried about him.
The Brewers will look to close out the Giants series with a win this Thursday, with Milwaukee getting the ball to Aaron Civale.
