The Milwaukee Brewers suffered another devastating playoff loss on Thursday night as they lost an elimination game in the Wild Card Series against the New York Mets. Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick scored the games first runs by hitting back-to-back home runs and gave Devin Williams a two run lead entering the ninth inning. Unfortunately one of the game’s best closers was unable to get the job done as he surrendered four runs and the Brew Crew went on to lose 4-2.
New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead three run home run off Devin Williams in the ninth inning.
Facing the top of the Mets lineup Devin Williams began the ninth inning by issuing a walk on eight pitches to Francisco Lindor. From there he did get Mark Vientos out on strikes, but Brandon Nimmo then laced a single up the middle as he took advantage of seeing the changeup three pitches in a row. After that Pete Alonso got into a hitters count (3-1) and took a low and outside changeup to the opposite field for a go-ahead three run home run.

After Alonso’s go-ahead three run home run Devin Williams ended up giving up one more run before eventually being replaced by Joe Ross. Williams got Jose Iglesias to ground out immediately following the home run but he then hit Jesse Winker in a 1-2 count, allowed Winker to steal second base, and then gave up a base knock to Starling Marte in which Winker raced home and emphatically smashed his helmet into the ground in excitement after scoring.
Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams responds to the ninth inning disaster by saying, “No one feels worse than I do.”
Post-game Devin Williams was one popular player being interviewed. Williams was obviously disappointed with the outcome. He described his emotions as, “Everyone got the job done but me. No one feels worse than I do.”
“This is the closest team I’ve ever played with. That’s what makes it that much more disappointing. Everyone did their job except for me”

The Brewers run of bad post season outcomes continues.
Unfortunately since the Brewers deep playoff run in 2018 they have not had good luck in the post-season. In 2019 they similarly lost by blowing a lead late in the game and losing to the Washington Nationals. Two years later they lost to the eventual World Series champion Atlanta Braves, last year they lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and this year they were three outs away from their first post season series victory in five attempts but once again they came up short.
Despite the outcome the 2024 Brewers had a great season. They did exceed all expectations, but they had the characteristics to be a special team and that makes this loss to the Mets even tougher. The good news is a lot of the young core will remain intact for 2025 and hopefully they can put themselves in playoff position again next year.
