The Milwaukee Brewers lost two out of three games to the Chicago Cubs, their nine game win streak was snapped, and their National League Central Division lead is down to three games. During Wednesday’s series finale a wild eighth inning ended up being the difference as a Cody Bellinger ricochet infield single resulted in the eventual game winning run being scored. After the game Brewers manager Craig Counsell had three interesting comments on that inning.
Three interesting takes from Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell after a series loss to the Chicago Cubs.
In Craig Counsell’s post game interview he revealed three of his thoughts on how the eighth inning unfolded.
“The last five outs of the game certainly went their way but that’s the way it goes.”

One thing Craig Counsell mentioned is the fact that he believed the error charged to Willy Adames was wrong. His shortstop got charged with an E-6 after he could not come up with a tough back-handed pick to begin the eighth inning.
Secondly he revealed that there was never a thought about pitching around Cody Bellinger. Bellinger recorded the go-ahead RBI and he had reliever Joel Payamps pitch to him despite first base being open. He is the Cubs most productive hitter so putting him on base theoretically makes some sense, but it also would have gave star shortstop Dansby Swanson a shot to be the hero.
Lastly, Craig Counsell indicated on the ricochet infield single that Willy Adames was positioned perfectly defensively and would have had a play on the ball. Had the ball not hit pitcher Joel Payamps in the ankle the inning likely would have ended and the game would have remained tied.
Unfortunately the Brewers did not get the bounces that they needed in this series. Milwaukee and Chicago will match up one more time this season on September 29-October 1. That match up will most certainly have playoff implications.
