Longtime Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell is currently exploring options outside of the Brew Crew. A decision is supposedly coming soon and so far known interviews have happened with the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians. The Houston Astros also additionally expressed interest.
Of these teams mentioned above a report has surfaced indicating that Craig Counsell is no longer the lead candidate for one of these teams with a managerial vacancy. That team is the Houston Astros.

Dusty Baker’s retirement has left the Houston Astros in need of a manager. Their organization has had a ton of success recently and another solid manager could be a difference maker for them. Craig Counsell certainly fits that bill, but a report from Bob Nightengale is suggesting that GM Dana Brown is pushing for another candidate.

Bob Nightengale’s report suggests that the Astros GM is hopeful that bench coach Joe Espada will be promoted to manager. Joe Espada has been with Houston since 2018 and has been interested in becoming a manager for at least the past three seasons. Now that Dusty Baker is retired he is one internal candidate that the Astros could turn to.

At this time no reports have surfaced indicating whether Houston interviewed Craig Counsell or not. Regardless the Astros likely won’t make a decision at manager until after Craig Counsell makes his. Where he signs will likely dedicate a lot of other moves around the league, so until that happens speculations will continue.
