Former Milwaukee Brewers star Corbin Burnes’ first season with the Baltimore Orioles is now over. The O’s have packed their bags for vacation after getting swept by Bobby Witt Jr. and the Kansas City Royals in an American League Wild Card Round Series.
After the Orioles’ 2-1 loss at home in Game 2 on Wednesday, Burnes gave a deep reflection about Baltimore, which won 91 games in the regular season and finished second in the American League East division behind the New York Yankees.
Via Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun:
“Yeah, the talent on this roster was unbelievable. Obviously, we had first-rounders all across the board, which is special, knowing that these are some of the best players in the game and they were recognized that when they were drafted, and a lot of those guys had really good years.
You’ve possibly got the Rookie of the Year, a guy that’s going to get some MVP votes, one of the best catchers in the league, and that’s not counting a lot of guys that contribute a lot to this team. So, just the depth of young guys that they have here made this team special and made it such an exciting team. Unfortunately, we just kind of ran out of gas.”
Will ex-Milwaukee Brewers star Corbin Burnes return to the Orioles?
Burnes pitched well in the series opener, as he allowed just an earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk issued through eight innings.
However, Baltimore’s offense simply was not there to capitalize on his great performance, as the Orioles ended up losing, 1-0. In Game 2, Baltimore’s bats failed to wake up again, with the Orioles’ only run coming off of a solo home run by Cedric Mullins.
Burnes’ future is uncertain, as he’s about to hit the free-agent market in the offseason. He spent his first six seasons in the big leagues with the Brewers before Milwaukee traded him to the Orioles last February.
In his first year with Baltimore, Burnes went 15-9 with a 2.92 ERA across 32 games.
