The Baltimore Orioles are headed to the MLB postseason for the second year in a row, and this time, they have ace and former Milwaukee Brewers star pitcher Corbin Burnes with them. Burnes has already pitched his last regular-season game of 2024 on Thursday evening versus the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. However, he was abruptly pulled from the mound after just 5.0 innings, but not because of an injury or anything serious.
Via Jon Morosi of the MLB Network:
“Initial indications from the Orioles here with Burnes are that he is not injured. There’s nothing health related that’s the reason why he’s come out of the ballgame. But rather they’re trying to manage his workload because assuming the Orioles are in a wild card series, their next game, their first or his first start, rather the postseason will be only five days from right now so on regular rest
Ex-Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes pulled after five innings vs. New York Yankees
The Orioles apparently just want to give Burnes rest for the upcoming postseason, especially since Baltimore is set to play in a wild-card game. The Yankees were still needing a win to officially clinch the American League Central division at the time of Burnes’ exit from the contest, but Baltimore knew that with just a few games left to play and with the Orioles trailing New York by four games, the odds are that they are headed to the wild card first.
Burnes left the Yankees game having allowed just an earned run on two hits with a walk issued and nine strikeouts through 69 pitches. Baltimore’s bullpen then wasted Burnes’ great start, as the Orioles’ relievers gave up nine runs to the Bronx Bombers in a 10-1 O’s loss.
Burnes, who pitched for the Brewers in his first six seasons in the big leagues, finishes his 2024 stint with a 1509 record, 2.92 ERA, and 1.10 WHIP across 32 starts.
