Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes is one year away from entering free agency. The former Cy Young award winner has been one of the best pitchers in the game since he broke out in 2020. This has him set up for a massive pay day in the near future.

On a recent episode of Foul Territory Corbin Burnes was fully transparent regarding his contract and future with the Milwaukee Brewers. To nobody’s surprise there have been no contract extensions talks, he wants to test the market next off-season, and the front office knows that he is too expensive to retain long term.
Corbin Burnes gets fully transparent regarding his contract and future with the Milwaukee Brewers.

When former Brewers catcher Erik Kratz asked Corbin Burnes if he had been approached regarding a contract extension he had a lengthy response. Corbin Burnes was fully transparent and even referenced why a deal didn’t get done several years ago when he was first bursting onto the scene.
“No. No that was never something we got to. I think that obviously coming off the shortened season of 2020 when I had my first good season and then going into 2021 it was kind of a wait and see if this was a one off year or if they thought this was something that they thought we could consider long term.”

“I think year-after-year that I’ve been good it just got to the point where it’s just like ‘hey’. They know the situation, where they are at, and their market size. Instead of making a player angry and sending a small, or really short term, or really low number for an extension, it’s just like ‘hey’ lets be up front. We respect what you’ve done and we are not gonna come at you with something that we don’t feel you’re worth as far as the market goes.”
“So no there were never really talks there. I think a few years ago I probably would have been open to going and getting something done, but I think at this point we both kind of know, both sides know that we are a year away from free agency, we want to see what the market can bring, but we’ll see what happens.”
To hear this from Corbin Burnes is not surprising. He said what everybody had been assuming for quite some time. Also mentioned, and can be seen in the full video below, was the fact that he admitted to the front office telling him that he has priced himself out of Milwaukee.
The biggest question now is if the Brewers will trade him before he hits the open market or if he will play out the 2024 season wearing their uniform.
