It was another great night for the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday. They kicked off a three-game series at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 3-2 victory on the strength of a strong performance on the mound, particularly from starter Frankie Montas.
The 31-year-old Montas was seriously dealing on the mound, as he looked to make a strong statement with his throws, as observed by Brewers catcher William Contreras, who had a big game himself. Contreras said he communicated his thoughts on Montas’ aggressiveness which he observed to have caused a little fatigue on the pitcher’s arm.
Via the Associated Press (h/t ESPN):
Contreras, who was behind the plate for Milwaukee, said Montas was aggressive.
“He was attacking the zone,” Contreras said through an interpreter. “I think a little bit late there, maybe he got a little bit tired, and maybe got away from that a little bit, but we had a conversation in the dugout just to keep on doing what he been doing all game, stay aggressive, keep attacking the zone, and yeah, it was all working for him.”
Montas exited the mound after seven innings of fantastic work, having allowed zero runs and just a hit with a walk issued and three punchouts in just 89 pitches. The Brewers went with Nick Mears after Montas’ night ended and it nearly turned into a complete disaster. Mears allowed two earned runs in just 0.2 innings, cutting Milwaukee’s lead down to a run. Jared Koenig helped extinguish the fire by finishing the eighth inning with a strikeout of Tommy Pham.
In the ninth frame, Devin Williams allowed two hits but held the Cardinals scoreless while striking out three hitters to get the save.
