The Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies started an important three game series on Monday, September 16. Philadelphia entered the night with the best record in the National League and also led the season series with Milwaukee three games to zero. A 6-2 Brewers win changed that in which veteran arm Colin Rea also recorded his first career save.
How did the Milwaukee Brewers generate six runs against the Philadelphia Phillies?
The Brewers offense supplied a steady dose of base runners in this game. As a team they collected eight hits, drew five walks, and stole five bases. They had three total extra base hits as a William Contreras double (116 MPH off the bat) scored the games first two runs and a Joey Ortiz triple in the sixth made it 4-1. Other run producing plays included a Joey Ortiz SAC fly in the fourth inning, Brice Turang single in the sixth, and a Gary Sanchez SAC fly in the seventh.
Colin Rea recorded his first career save.
Aaron Civale was the Brewers starting pitcher in this game. He finished the game with five innings pitched, one earned run, and six punchouts. After allowing back-to-back singles to begin the sixth inning Hoby Milner came in and replaced him. Milner stranded both inherited runners in the sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh inning as he allowed a leadoff single and then hit the second batter with a pitch.
After Milner got one out via a pop out Colin Rea then entered the game in the seventh, pitched the last 2.2 innings without giving up a run, and earned his first career save. Rea has been a staple in the team’s starting rotation this year, but was asked to come out of the bullpen in this game.
How did this Milwaukee Brewers win impact the National League standings?
With this victory the Brewers magic number dropped to two games. The Chicago Cubs defeated the Oakland Athletics Monday night, but now as early as tomorrow Milwaukee could be crowned National League Central champions. In the National League the Phillies still own the best record (90-60), the Los Angeles Dodgers are second (89-61), and the Brewers third (87-63). The Dodgers were winners on Monday night so Milwaukee did not gain any ground on Los Angeles for the #2 seed.
Game two out of three will be Tuesday, September 17 with the first pitch schedule for 6:40 PM CT.
