After getting lit up by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a previous start, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Colin Rea rebounded with a strong performance that nearly became historic.
Rea sizzled on the mound on Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians, as he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. It was not until a single from Steven Kwan in the sixth frame that the Guardians finally got a hit off of Rea.
“I knew the situation of the game, with Kwan coming up there for the third time there in the sixth,” Rea said about that moment, per Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
“But there’s still a lot of game left at that point, so still trying to attack and get ahead. I ended up falling behind and he got a good barrel to that 3-1 pitch. At that point, it’s a close game, so it’s one batter at a time, one pitch at a time at that point.”
Despite losing a no-hit bid, Rea still turned heads with his performance. He was replaced in the seventh inning but not before allowing just two hits with no earned runs and five strikeouts through 88 pitches. Bryan Hudson and Jared Koenig made sure that Rea’s effort wouldn’t go to waste, as they retired all hitters they faced to record a hold and a save, respectively, in a 2-0 victory. Rea came away with his 11th win of the season and improved his numbers to 3.52 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.
The Brewers are now 72-52 going into their next series against the St. Louis Cardinals on the road at Busch Stadium.
