Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Colin Rea was arguably the team’s most consistent starter during the first half of the season. Unfortunately things have been different post all-star break and during his most recent outing against the San Francisco Giants he got tagged with 10 earned runs. Is there cause for concern with him going forward and into the playoffs?
Colin Rea saw his ERA rise 0.49 points after a disastrous outing against the San Francisco Giants.
On Wednesday night in Oracle Park the Giants teed off on Colin Rea. His 10 earned runs matched the most by a MLB pitcher this season. San Francisco scored four runs in the first inning, four in the second inning, and then two more in the fourth. Rea gave up three home runs and 11 hits. This caused his season ERA to rise 0.49 points as he entered the night with a 3.72 ERA and left with it up to 4.21.
Taking a look at the pre and post all-star break numbers on Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea.
Prior to the all-star break Colin Rea appeared in 19 games for the Brewers (16 starts) and tossed 105 innings. His ERA at that time was 3.77, his WHIP 1.21, and he had surrendered 14 home runs. Post all-star break he has made nine starts, covered 49 innings, has a 5.14 ERA, and has given up 13 home runs. If you eliminate his most recent start when he gave up 10 earned runs to the San Francisco Giants his post all-star break ERA was 3.60.
If the post season started today would Colin Rea be a member of a best of three Wild Card series starting rotation?
As the standings currently sit the Brewers own the #3 seed in the playoffs and would have to play in a best of three games Wild Card Series against the #6 seed. If the post season started today there is a strong case that Colin Rea, who as mentioned was the team’s most consistent starter in the first half, may not be a part of the starting rotation. His post all-star break struggles do play a factor in this but also his teammates have been pitching very well too.
Post all-star break Tobias Myers currently leads the starting pitchers in ERA at 2.63. Freddy Peralta is second at 3.25, Aaron Civale third at 3.80, Frankie Montas fourth at 3.92, and then Colin Rea at 5.14. Myers and Peralta look like locks to pitch in the first two games and then if needed (win or go home game) Milwaukee would likely get creative with their pitching but at this point it is kind of a toss up as to if Civale, Montas, or Rea would be the favorite to start a potential third game.
