Devin Williams helped the Milwaukee Brewers hold on to a 7-5 victory during Sunday’s finale against the San Francisco Giants. The Giants came into Milwaukee and won the first three games by shutting them out in game one and by giving up just one run in each of the next two games. During the finale the Brew Crew’s offense finally came to life.
Over the first two innings the Brewers scored all seven of their runs. RBI hits from William Contreras, Brian Anderson, and Owen Miller quickly put all of the momentum in Milwaukee’s favor. Starting pitcher Colin Rea carried a six run lead into the seven inning before he gave up a three run home run that suddenly made the game close again.
Out of the bullpen the Brewers used Joel Payamps for three outs, Peter Strzelecki for two, and then Devin Williams for four outs. The Giants had the tying run at the plate on a few occasions but Milwaukee’s relievers were able to retain the lead in large part due to Devin Williams securing another multi-inning save.
Devin Williams records his third multi-inning save of the year for the Milwaukee Brewers.
With the Brewers struggling to win lately Devin Williams has not been used much during the month of May. However, with this game included, his last three appearances have all ended in successful saves going multiple innings. His saves total is now up to eight on the year.
Other notes from this game include Andruw Monasterio making his MLB debut, Owen Miller being removed for precautionary reasons with a forearm contusion, and Jesse Winker being scratched from the lineup due to neck soreness. Another nugget is that Colin Rea worked into the seventh inning for the first time since 2016.
