Milwaukee Brewers star outfielder Christian Yelich will not play baseball for at least the rest of the 2024 MLB season announcing on Thursday that he would be going under the knife to repair a back injury that has kept him sidelined since July.
“It just got to the point where it wasn’t getting better,” Yelich said in a video he posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. “I tried everything I could and I ran out of options. It came time to make a decision, it was the best option that we had. These things happen, you get hurt, you get fixed and then you get back out there.”
It is a disappointing update for Brewers fans, as many held out to the hope that they would still be seeing the former National League Most Valuable Player play this season and help Milwaukee reach the ultimate goal of winning a World Series.

Understandably, Yelich and Brewers fans are crushed by this news.
From @TheShiftologist: “Actually crying to this, but know this: Your impact in Milwaukee goes so much further than this season. You were the catalyst that led to the pedigree we see with this team each year officially cementing Milwaukee as a consistent contender!
Via @Baseball4Ever9: “Prayers up for a speedy recovery 🙏 much love from a pirates fan!! Great ball player and fun to watch. Sucks to see you miss the rest of the season 😭😭 get well soon Christian!!!”
“You can see the pain in eyes man, praying for him in his recovery 🙏🏻,” commented @JRam4MVP.
“This sucks so much 😢,” said @LostTribeSports
“This Brewer fan is devastated for you. Injuries suck! Take pride in the fantastic season you’ve had ! Praying for a speedy recovery! 🙏❤️⚾️” – @1BRWRFN
With Yelich done for the rest of the year, he finishes the 2024 season with a batting line of 315/.406/.504 to go with 11 home runs, 42 RBIs, and a 152 OPS+.
