The Milwaukee Brewers had catcher Martin Maldonado on the big league roster from 2011-2016.  Following that he bounced around a bit by playing with the Los Angeles Angels, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, and the Chicago Cubs.

Despite having a few different stints with the Astros from 2017-2019, Maldonado was able to consistently call Houston home for each of the past four seasons.  At the end of the 2023 season he became a free agent and Houston ended up signing former Brewers catcher Victor Caratini.  .

The Astros decision to sign Caratini signaled the end of Maldonado’s time in Houston.  Until recently the 37 year old found himself available as a free agent again, but he now has signed a one year deal with the Chicago White Sox.

Maldonado’s decision to sign with the White Sox did stir up some controversy between both fan bases.  Here are some reactions from both sides.

Except he’s a horrible defender now so this is completely pointless

    — Mike (@ChiSoxFanMike) December 27, 2023

He is a pitchers catcher, guy can call games better than most in the bigs at this point. And guys like Verlander praise him, let’s give him a chance

    — Andy O’Hara (#SellTheSox (@TheAndyOhara) December 27, 2023

Do the White Sox know you can field a team of non-catchers?

    — Winky Christ (@WinkyChrist) December 27, 2023

The staff is going to be very young and will do well with Maldonado’s guidance.

White Sox are literally harvesting all former Astro catchers. Korey Lee, Max Stassi, Maldy 😭

    — Swagakas (@Swagakas) December 27, 2023

He’ll be back in Houston at the deadline
