After being swept by the lowly Oakland A’s and hated rival Minnesota Twins, the Milwaukee Brewers have retaken first place in the National League Central Division by winning their first two games of their current series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They are fortunate to have a team to play at all this weekend. According to a report by ESPN, the bus driver hired to transport the Pirates from Chicago to Milwaukee was pulled over and arrested for driving under the influence.
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bus Driver Was Arrested for DUI Ahead of Series with Milwaukee Brewers
According to ESPN’s report:
The driver, 61-year-old Ronald E. Funderburke of Shelby, North Carolina, displayed multiple signs of impairment, according to police, and was arrested after a trooper initially requested an ambulance out of concern for a medical emergency. Funderburke was not affiliated with the team. He was contracted by the club.
Pirates senior vice president of communications Brian Warecki confirmed the incident to media outlets on Friday, saying in part, “We are deeply concerned regarding what transpired last night. The important thing is that all of our personnel arrived in Milwaukee safely … we are now in communication with the appropriate parties regarding this matter.”
It should be noted that the driver is not an employee of the Brewers nor the Pirates. He works (or, I suppose now “used to work”) for the company the Pirates organization hired to transport their players from Chicago to Milwaukee.
