The Milwaukee Brewers have been hampered by injuries in their starting rotation this year. As a result Bryse Wilson has been thrust into the mix, but had numerous occasions of first inning struggles. Manager Pat Murphy has combated this by intermittently using an opener for him and the strategy appears to be working.
Bryse Wilson has struggled in the first inning of ball games this year.
Across 11 starts Bryse Wilson has allowed seven runs to cross home plate in the first inning this year. His first inning ERA as a result is 6.52. When digging deeper into the statistics his ERA this year as a starting pitcher is 4.75, but as a reliever (opener strategy deployed) his ERA is 2.78.
The Milwaukee Brewers have used openers on days Bryse Wilson is scheduled to pitch.
A year ago Bryse Wilson was the unsung hero of the Brewers. That year he operated out of the bullpen and was able to work multiple innings. This year he is being asked to pitch to a starting pitchers workload but as documented he was having a tough time in the first inning. As a result players like Jared Koenig and most recently Hoby Milner have been used as openers on days where Wilson is scheduled to pitch.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Bryse Wilson is the first “reliever” since 1987 with this accomplishment.
Across his last two “relief” outings Wilson has thrown 5.2 innings and 6.0 innings (openers used), but these have essentially been equivalent to starts. The good news is that the first inning troubles were erased and as a result he has strung together back-to-back incredible “relief” performances where he hasn’t surrendered a run. Per OptaSTATs he is the first pitcher since 1987 to throw 5+ shutout innings in relief and earn the win.

June 15 vs. Cin: 5.1 IP, 0 R, W
Tonight vs. Tex: 6.0 IP, 0 R, WHe’s the first MLB pitcher to toss 5.0+ shutout innings and earn the win in consecutive relief appearances since Dennis Eckersley did it from June 6-10, 1987. pic.twitter.com/FxdcWmPYmU

It will be interesting to see if Pat Murphy leans toward using an opener for Bryse Wilson with even more frequency. In between June 15 and June 26 he made a start against the San Diego Padres where he got tagged with five earned runs. For whatever reason he appears to pitch better when entering the game out of the bullpen.
