The Milwaukee Brewers deployed an interesting strategy early on in the 2024 MLB Draft. They made selections of Braylon Payne and Blake Burke at 17th and 34th in which both ended up signing for under the estimated slot value. At 57th and 67th overall they then drafted two high upside prep arms from the New Jersey area in hopes of being able to pry them away from their college commitments.
Milwaukee Brewers second round pick has officially signed with the organization for a deal $1 million over slot value.
Second round pick, right-handed pitcher Bryce Meccage, has signed with the Brewers for $2.5 million. The slot value for this pick was $1,562,100. Milwaukee saved approximately $1.1 million when Braylon Payne signed for under slot value, so all of those saving essentially went towards prying Meccage away from the University of Virgina.
Will the Milwaukee Brewers be able to secure Chris Levonas?
Selected just 10 picks after Bryce Meccage was right-handed pitcher Chris Levonas. He has a college commitment to Wake Forest. His estimated slot value at 67th overall is $1,230,000 and the Brewers will have to go over that amount in order to pry him away. As mentioned, Milwaukee did also save money when Blake Burke signed for approximately $500,000 less than his slot value, so perhaps all of those funds will get redistributed to Levonas in order to sign him.
When is the deadline to sign 2024 MLB Draft picks?
Per MLB.com each team has until 5:00 PM ET on August 1 to sign 2024 MLB Draft picks. Along with working hard to get a deal done with Chris Levonas the Brewers are also dealing with the stress of the July 30 trade deadline.
