The Milwaukee Brewers selected prep arm Bryce Meccage with the 57th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. He signed for more than $1.00 million over his slot value after previously having a college commitment to the University of Virginia. Recently he caught up with Baseball Prospect Journal writer Dan Zielinski and discussed the draft process, his pitches, and much more.
Bryce Meccage didn’t talk with the Milwaukee Brewers much leading up to the 2024 MLB Draft.
Throughout the scouting and draft process Bryce Meccage did talk with the Brewers, but not a lot leading up to draft day. Meccage shared that he had a five hour video conference with Milwaukee in November of 2023, but didn’t hear from them much afterwards or during the combine. The Brewers area scout in New Jersey had previously coached Meccage when he was younger, so it’s possible that they already had all the information they needed on him and that’s why there was not much communication leading up to draft day.
Bryce Meccage shared his pitch repertoire, grips, and usage.
As a dominant prep pitcher Bryce Meccage was able to get by High School hitters with a high velocity fastball. He did however continue to work on his other pitches. At this juncture he feels good about his slider, the tight spin to it, and his ability to locate it low in the zone. His curveball has a lot of 12-6 action and is a pitch he feels he can reliably throw low in the zone. Lastly he has developed a kick changeup. Meccage indicates he is not a good pronator, so the grip on this particular changeup allows for movement to occur without having to excessively pronate the arm.
The Milwaukee Brewers facilities, ability to develop pitchers, and location of minor league teams are a few things Bryce Meccage is excited about.
In the full video, located below, Bryce Meccage also talks about how a portion of his decision to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers was based on them having newer/nicer facilities, their reputation for developing pitchers, and the location of their minor league teams on the East Coast.
