Injuries to the Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation have left them scrambling to find healthy arms. They recently signed Julio Teheran to a Major League contract in order to fill their five man rotation. They are in this situation because Brandon Woodruff is out until at least late June, Aaron Ashby is recovering from shoulder surgery, Wade Miley is out with a posterior serratus strain, and Eric Lauer is also on the injured list. With all of this going on a Boston Red Sox starting pitcher was recently named as a player they could look to target in a trade.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Tanner Houck listed as a trade target for the Milwaukee Brewers.
According to Liam Hanley of ClutchPoints the Milwaukee Brewers should trade for Tanner Houck due to all the injuries in their starting rotation.
Looking at the Brewers’ pitching depth in Spring Training, it is hard to believe that the Brewers would need a starting pitcher only a quarter of the way through the year.
The quartet of Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Eric Lauer, and Freddy Peralta represented one of the best rotations in baseball, and Wade Miley, Aaron Ashby, and Adrian Houser all had the ability to become that fifth starter.
Now, midway through May, Woodruff and Ashby are on the 60-day IL, Lauer is in the bullpen, and Houser missed all of April with an injury — leaving a lot of “TBD’s” as the Brewers’ probable pitchers.
Tanner Houck has been a swingman for much of his career, with this year his first as a regular starter. His 5.48 ERA isn’t pretty, but a 4.00 expected ERA shows promise for a guy with one of the nastiest sliders in baseball.
Hanley’s publication came prior to Eric Lauer being placed on the injured list, but that injury just re-enforces that the Brewers are in desperate need for starting pitchers. Julio Teheran was good in his first start for the Brew Crew, but it’s unfair to place high expectations on him.
If the Brewers were going to pursue Tanner Houck it would be costly. He is a young controllable arm that has not reached arbitration yet. Acquiring Houck would provide immediate help, but a big trade for him seems unlikely.
