The Milwaukee Brewers have not had a quiet offseason by any means. Willy Adames was signed by the San Francisco Giants and Devin Williams was traded to the New York Yankees on Friday.
The Brewers are not done making moves this offseason. They will have to find an Adames and Williams replacement for the 2025 season. Another player on the roster that could very well be moved is starting pitcher Aaron Civale.
Reviewingthebrew.com Writer David Gasper Thinks That the Milwaukee Brewers Could Be Trading Aaron Civale Next After the Devin Williams Trade
Reviewingthebrew.com writer David Gasper wrote about two players who could be potentially traded this offseason after Milwaukee decided to trade Devin Williams to the Yankees. One name Gasper mentioned was starting pitcher Aaron Civale.
Civale was acquired in a trade during the 2024 MLB season from the Tampa Bay Rays. David Gasper said about the possibility of the Brewers moving off of Aaron Civale before the 2025 season begins:
“The Brewers generally don’t like to carry pitchers into their final season before free agency, opting to trade early and recoup some value before potentially losing them for nothing. With the addition of Nestor Cortes now, the Brewers have two veteran starters entering their final season of arbitration before hitting free agency in Cortes and Aaron Civale.
Some may speculate that the Brewers could flip Cortes for a more controllable starter. However, I think that’s the less likely outcome. Brewers GM Matt Arnold praised the leadership of Cortes and what he’ll bring to the clubhouse. Given the void left by Willy Adames’ departure, that leadership and presence will be much needed in Milwaukee.
Cortes is projected to earn $7.7MM next year and the Yankees sent $2MM in cash along in the trade. Civale is projected to earn a very similar $8.0MM in 2025. Cortes, in that sense, is the less expensive option. The Brewers could flip Civale, who was acquired back in July, and fill other needs, including potentially bringing back a starting pitcher that’s perhaps under more years of team control.
The Brewers rotation is in a pretty strong spot now with Cortes in the fold. Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff (if healthy), Cortes, Civale, and Tobias Myers project as the starting five currently. But with DL Hall and Aaron Ashby pushing for rotation spots, and the Brewers wanting to give them that opportunity, a trade of Civale could clear that space for them.”
Aaron Civale is 29 years old. Overall last season, he had an 8-9 record and a 4.36 ERA. In 17 games, he pitched in 87.0 innings and gave up 93 hits and 51 runs. Civale walked 27 batters and struck out 84 batters.
Civale Was Traded To Tampa Bay In 2023
The Cleveland Guardians traded Aaron Civale to the Tampa Bay Rays during the 2023 MLB season. If Civale were to be traded again, this would be his fourth different team over the last two to three years. If the Milwaukee Brewers were to trade him, they probably wouldn’t get much in return for him.
Even though he has one-year remaining on his contract, it would be better to keep Civale around for the 2025 MLB season. If he pitches well and if Milwaukee is out of the playoff race by the MLB trade deadline, then they should trade him. It would be better for the Brewers to wait to move him rather than just make a trade for the sake of making one.
