The Milwaukee Brewers failed to follow up on their series-opening victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, as they faltered in Tuesday night’s 7-4 loss to their National League Central division rivals at home.
The Brewers and the Cardinals needed extra innings to finish the game, with St. Louis’ offense taking home the win after scoring three runs in the 12th inning and shutting the door on Milwaukee in the bottom of the frame.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised the Cardinals’ pitchers for getting the job done against his men, while also lamenting Milwaukee’s subpar offense.
“You credit the St. Louis pitching, if you want, because I think they did a really nice job,” Murphy said following the game, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).
“It wasn’t our normal output in my mind.”
The Brewers’ offense fell short in loss to St. Louis
The Brewers are fifth in the big leagues with 4.9 runs per game and 10th with a .252 batting average, but they mustered just three runs by the end of the ninth inning. The game could have ended in the 11th inning when Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI single broke a 3-3 tie, but Willy Adames had a game-tying RBI double later in the frame.
The top four hitters in the order of the Brewers combined for just 2-for-17, with both hits coming from Jackson Chourio. The Brewers were just 2-for-11 when there was at least a runner on base and recorded 17 strikeouts.
Milwaukee will look to provide Wednesday starter Colin Rea with healthier run support in the series finale.
