The Milwaukee Brewers entered the month of September having exceeded expectations placed upon them at the start of the season. Despite numerous injuries they overcame adversity and hit their expected win total from the projection system PECOTA on August 30 as that model only had them securing 79 wins. Now at 81-57 they have the largest division lead in Major League Baseball, but with one month to go the job isn’t done yet and some important series lay ahead.
Here we take a look at four upcoming September series that the Milwaukee Brewers will play that may have massive playoff implications.
Series #1: September 13-15 – Arizona Diamondbacks.
The reigning National League champs got off to a slow start this season, but now they are right in the thick of the playoff race. As of September 2 they are six games back in the National League West, but they would be post-season bound as the #5 seed (Wild Card). San Diego currently is a half game ahead of them as the #4 seed in which the higher seed (#4 vs #5) would host the best of three Wild Card Series.
Series #2: September 16-18 – Philadelphia Phillies.
After facing the Diamondbacks on the tail end of their last west coast trip the Brewers will square off against the Phillies in Milwaukee. Philadelphia and Milwaukee are neck and neck for the #2 seed in the playoffs in which the top two seeds get a first round bye. The Brewers were swept by the Phillies in three games earlier this year so if Milwaukee can win all three against them at home the tie-breaker would boil down to each teams record within their division. Currently the Brewers are 30-17 against their division opponents whereas the Phillies are 23-15.
Series #3: September 19-22 – Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks make this list twice as Milwaukee will face them for seven total games in September. This really speaks to how tough of a schedule the Brewers have down the stretch as they will be squaring off against playoff contenders as they look to clinch the division as well as a top seed in the playoffs. These teams won’t make it easy and Milwaukee is going to have to continue playing a good brand of baseball in order to earn what they have worked so hard for all season.
Series #4: September 27-29 – New York Mets.
This year the Brewers began the season against the Mets in New York and they will finish against the Mets but in Milwaukee. The Mets have surprisingly put themselves in playoff contention and as of September 2 they are one game out of a spot in the post-season. It’s likely that the final series of the regular season will have playoff implications for both teams.
