The Milwaukee Brewers were victorious in the first of a four-game series against the San Diego Padres. Despite former Brewers outfielder Trent Grisham tying the game in eighth inning with a two-run home run, Milwaukee was able to take advantage of the extra inning ghost runner on their way to victory in 10 innings. While the Brewers were unable to get anything going in the ninth off of former closer Josh Hader, Rowdy Tellez’s 10th inning sac fly off of Luis Garcia scoring the ghost runner (Yelich) proved to be the difference in the game. Joel Payamps recorded the save in the 10th inning after Devin Williams struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth.
It is so much easier to come up with three positives during a win because, well, there are so many to choose from. Such was the case in last night’s thrilling win, but here are the three that stand out the most:
1. Milwaukee Brewers First Baseman Rowdy Tellez
The Brewers’ first baseman is off to a slow start to the season, but had his best game of the season at an opportune time. Tellez went 2-3 with a walk, a home run, and three RBI. His two-run home run in the first inning gave the Brewers an early lead and his RBI sacrifice fly in the tenth made the difference in the game.
2. Colin Rea Was Stellar in His Milwaukee Brewers Debut
At one point, it looked like the Milwaukee Brewers’ projected starting rotation was going to be one of the deepest in baseball. Now, however, Brandon Woodruff, Adrian Houser, and Aaron Ashby are all in the IL. After Janson Junk lost his Brewers’ debut against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Milwaukee sent him down and called up Colin Rea.
Rea allowed a run in the first inning, but was otherwise as solid as the Brewers could have asked him to be. He went 5.2 innings, allowed just two hits, a walk, and struck out six. It is safe to say that he has earned more opportunities to start.
3. Mike Brosseau Stays Hot
Of the six games that Mike Brosseau has played in this season, he has hit safely in five of them. Against the Padres, Brosseau was 1-3 with a solo home run. It was his second home run in his past three games. He is now hitting .300/.364/.650 on the season.
Also Worth Noting
- Brewers catcher William Contreras extended his hit streak to 10 games.
- First baseman Luke Voit collected another hit.
- Christian Yelich scored two of the Brewers’ four runs.
- Three Brewers’ relievers (Payamps, Williams, and and Bryse Wilson) are tied for the club lead with one save apiece.
