The Milwaukee Brewers are entering play on August 6, 2024 with a 62-49 record. Despite slumping over the past three to four weeks they currently have the largest division lead in the league of six games. If they want to maintain that lead and compete for a first round bye in the playoffs they will need players to step up. Here we take a look at three specific players who must elevate their game over the final two months of the season.
Milwaukee Brewers player #1 who must step up: Freddy Peralta.
It has been an up and down season for Opening Day starter Freddy Peralta. He is still striking batters out at an elite clip (11.1 K:9), but his season ERA sits at an unflattering 3.89. Over his last eight starts he has been better (3.05 ERA) but limiting walks and home runs have still been his kryptonite. Having the best version of Freddy Peralta over the last stretch of the season will be one key to the Brewers regular season and post season success.
Milwaukee Brewers player #2 who must step up: Brice Turang.
Prior to the All-Star break Brice Turang was in a bit of a slump, but had still put together a case to be an All-Star as he hit for a .277 batting average, .731 OPS, and stole 30 bases. Unfortunately his struggles at the plate have continued as his season numbers have dropped to a .262 batting average, .683 OPS, and just two more stolen bases. His strengths of getting on base and taking second base have not been evident over the last five to six weeks and Milwaukee desperately needs him to get going again,
Milwaukee Brewers player #3 who must step up: Rhys Hoskins.
With Christian Yelich out the Brewers need the proven run producing threat Rhys Hoskins to thrive over the final two months. Hoskins 2024 numbers of batting average (.220), on-base percentage (.305) and slugging percentage (.441) are all career lows. He has contributed 19 home runs and 57 RBI, but an ideal goal would be to finish close to 30 home runs and 80 RBI.
