The Milwaukee Brewers and other MLB teams will have pitchers and catchers report next week. The 2024 MLB regular season isn’t far away and many free agents have yet to be signed. There are a lot of key names that have yet to be signed and you’d be surprised who is still out there.
A season ago, the Milwaukee Brewers won the National League Central with a 92-70 record, before getting swept in the National League Wild Card Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Which MLB free agents are still out on the market that General Manager Matt Arnold could sign?
After Losing Corbin Burnes Via Trade, the Milwaukee Brewers Need to Make a Push For Starting Pitcher Blake Snell
Burnes was traded to the Baltimore Orioles last week for DL Hall and Joey Ortiz. After the trade, there seems to be a hole in the Brewers’ rotation. It is shocking that the former Cy Young Winner has yet to be signed. Blake Snell would be excellent for Milwaukee if they want to contend in the National League and if they want to win the division again.
Snell was with the San Diego Padres a season ago and is 31 years old. He pitched in 32 games last season for San Diego. Blake Snell pitched in 180.0 innings and gave up 115 hits and 47 runs. He also walked 99 batters and struck out 234.
He would no doubt be the ace of this rotation. If they can’t find someone on the free agent market for the starting rotation, the Brewers rotation could be a problem for them this season.
Jordan Montgomery, Starting Pitcher
Another starting pitcher who is still out on the open market and he helped the Texas Rangers in a big way last season en route to their first World Series Title in franchise history. He is also 31 years old and Montgomery could be the cheaper option for the Milwaukee Brewers financially but would be a very good move for them.
Jordan Montgomery also played for the St. Louis Cardinals last season before being traded to Texas. Montgomery pitched in 32 games last season and had a 10-11 record with a 3.20 ERA. In 188.2 innings pitched, he gave up 177 hits and 75 runs. Jordan Montgomery also walked 48 batters and struck out 166.
Montgomery will be a big help for a team that signs him. The Milwaukee Brewers can’t sit there and not make a move on another starting pitcher.
Cody Bellinger, Outfielder/First Baseman/Designated Hitter
The Milwaukee Brewers need to add some more pop into their lineup. Yes, there is a log jam in the outfield and they signed Rhys Hoskins to play first base, but they need a designated hitter badly in the lineup. On the Brewers roster, Jahmai Jones is listed as the designated hitter and that’s not going to cut it for them.
Bellinger played for the Chicago Cubs last season. He is 28 years old. Cody Bellinger had a .307 batting average with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs, along with 20 stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .356.
He would be a nice help to the Brewers’ offense. Having William Contreras, Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, and Cody Bellinger in the same lineup would help Milwaukee out a ton and keep pitchers off balance.
