The 2022 MLB draft has officially come to an end. Players that were undrafted can still be signed by teams, but in this article we will highlight a few of the Brewers 21 selections.
Interestingly, the Brewers did not draft an outfielder in this year’s draft. That doesn’t mean that they eventually won’t transition out from their drafted position to the outfield, but it is something worth noting. Overall, the team selected six infielders, four catchers, and 11 pitchers. Two of the pitchers drafted are left-handed and they selected one switch-handed pitcher in Jurrangelo Cijntje.
Brewers 2022 MLB Draft – Day 1 Selections
Shortstop Eric Brown Jr out of Coastal Carolina was the teams first selection. Brown has a great feel for the strikezone and makes great contact. He is most known for his glove, so how successful he is as a professional will likely depend on how he performs at the plate.
6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher Jacob Misiorowski was the Brewers second round selection. He was selected out of the same Junior College that Aaron Ashby attended. Misiorowski can hit 100 MPH with his fastball and has a ton of upside.
Robert Moore, a shortstop out of Arkansas, was the Brewers final selection on day one during the competitive balance round. At the plate, he has good contact skills but struggled to put up good numbers this year during the college baseball season. This decreased his draft stock for he was rumored to be a first round selection at times.
Brewers 2022 MLB Draft – A Few Of The Day 2 Selections
Day 2 of the MLB draft consisted of rounds 3-10. The Brewers began the day by selecting a Canadian high school shortstop in Dylan O’Rae. O’Rae has a 70 grade speed and great contact skills. They followed this pick up by selecting the first of four catchers in Matthew Wood out of Penn State. Wood won the big ten batting title and the left-handed slugger values power over contact.
In the seventh round, third baseman Ben Metzinger out of Louisville was selected. Metzinger enjoyed a great 2022 college season where he walked (51) more than he struck out (45). His slash line was .312/.427/.591 with 19 home runs and 69 RBI.
With their last selection on day 2, the Brewers selected another tall and lengthy pitcher in Brian Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is a left-handed hurler who has been dominating in the cape cod league this summer. He does not possess elite velocity but he can consistently rely upon his slider and changeup to keep hitters off balance.
Brewers 2022 MLB Draft – A Few Of The Day 3 Selections
During the final 10 rounds, the Brewers selected six pitchers, two third basemen, and two catchers. Unfortunately it will be tough to sign all of them as six of the drafted players have college commitments. The Brewers could overwhelm a few of them with offers, in which signing Jurrangelo Cijntje would be the most intriguing. Along with being a switch-pitcher, he also wants to play the field. Hopefully the Brewers can pry him away from Mississippi State.
Two players that should sign are pitchers Cameron Wagoner and Aidan Maldonado. Wagoner played college baseball at Eastern Michigan and served primarily as a reliever. In 2022 he had a 3.49 ERA in 18 appearances. Maldonado was drafted by the Brewers in 2018 out of high school, but went on to play in Minnesota. He struck out 90 batters this year while throwing 73.2 innings.
Major league baseball players can be developed no matter what round they were drafted from. It will be fun to see how this year’s draft class pans out in years to come.
