A 2022 Michigan State win over the Wisconsin Badgers has been vacated after NCAA violations were revealed to have affected 14 Spartan wins.
Coach Jonathan Smith was forced to vacate all 14 of his wins from the 2022-2024 seasons after the NCAA learned an ineligible player had been participating in each game. Smith now has zero Big Ten Conference wins in his tenure with the Spartans. Michigan State is 3-6 this season with six-straight losses all coming against conference opponents.

Smith had not been the coach at the time of the initial two seasons of the ineligible player participating. Former coach Mel Tucker and interim coach Harlon Barnett coached the team during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Tucker and Barnett did not directly receive any punishment, but two staff members who served under the coaching duo did for “recruiting inducements” to the tune of $10,764 that was allegedly distributed to players during official visits.
Former Wisconsin Badgers’ director of player personnel Saeed Khalif was one of the staff members tied to the NCAA violations that occurred. Khalif received a six-year show-cause order that extends into 2031. Khalif had previously served on the Badgers’ staff for four seasons before joining Tucker and his staff at Michigan State for a brief period of time.
Vacating the wins puts an end to what had been a lengthy and thorough investigation into the Mel Tucker era. Michigan State reportedly assisted in the investigation and worked with the NCAA to limit the penalties that were handed down this afternoon. Spartans’ officials stated that the program is “disappointed” in the decision to vacate the wins and that the program recognizes “the opportunity for continued modernization” that was present in this situation.
The seasons in which the wins come from are largely considered to be part of the recent dark ages of Michigan State football. Aside from a notable ranked win over Illinois in 2022, the Spartans do not have much to vacate without a bowl appearance or win to show for during the time of the violations.
Michigan State Spartans Forced to Vacate Double OT Win Over Wisconsin Badgers

One such win that will need to be vacated came against the Wisconsin Badgers during the 2022 season, which was before the tenure of Coach Luke Fickell. The Spartans managed to defeat the Badgers, 34-28, in double overtime behind the performance of quarterback Payton Thorne.
Quarterback Graham Mertz threw for 131 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception during the loss. Mertz also recorded seven carries for zero yards in what would be one of his final games for Wisconsin.
Running back Braelon Allen recorded 29 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns while adding three receptions for 33 yards. Allen was the most valuable player for the team against the Spartans, but a key lost fumble handed the momentum over to Michigan State.
