Sibling rivalries are fairly commonplace in the NFL. Think Peyton and Eli Manning. John and Jim Harbaugh. JJ, Derek, and TJ Watt. The list could go on and on. Now, it appears that Matt and Mike LaFleur could be the newest additions to this batch of competing brothers.
LaFleur vs. LaFleur?
Green Bay’s beloved head coach appeared as a guest on a recent episode of Pardon My Take. Chicago native Dan Katz – better known as his popular Twitter personality ‘Big Cat’ – co-hosts the podcast.
During the interview, Katz broached the subject of his homestate team’s search for a new head coach, following their firing of Matt Nagy. “I got a guy circled. He’s the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets,” Katz said. “I thought he did a fantastic job this year.”
Katz was, of course, referring to Matt LaFleur’s younger brother, Mike. He’s reportedly in the running as a potential candidate for Chicago’s head coaching position.
When asked about this possibility, Matt couldn’t resist taking a playful shot at his little brother – as well as the Packers’ staunch division foe.
“If your brother [Mike] gets named the Bears’ coach, what’s your reaction?” Katz wondered.
“Oh, I’d throw a party for him! That’d be great. I’d love kicking his ass twice a year!” LaFleur replied, causing the PMT hosts to break out in laughter.
Then, Matt added in all seriousness, “I do think – and I’m not being a homer here – my brother did a really good job [in New York]. I’m his toughest critic, I promise you… I think he’s got a bright future in this league.”
It would certainly be an interesting dynamic having the LaFleur brothers at the helm of the teams with the NFL’s longest-running rivalry. However, if there’s any chance Mike could be as successful in Chicago as Matt has been in Green Bay, I think most Packers fans would agree that the younger LaFleur should coach somewhere else.
