Monday, February 2, the Green Bay Packers officially hired ex-Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon as defensive coordinator, replacing Jeff Hafley after his departure to Miami.
Matt LaFleur issued a warm welcome to his new defensive play caller:
“We are thrilled to add Jonathan Gannon to our coaching staff. He possesses tremendous experience as an NFL coordinator and head coach. I am confident that he will be an outstanding addition to our organization, as well as a strong leader of our defense. We welcome Jonathan, his wife, Gina, and their three children, Rocco, Lola and Angelo, to the Packers and the Green Bay community.”
Fans, however, don’t want to hear it. After another disappointing finish, they want answers. That starts with whether LaFleur will make good on his recent contract extension by achieving the playoff success the franchise has yet to enjoy under his watch.
LaFleur’s statement offers little comfort to fed up fans
Many Packer fans weren’t equally “thrilled” with the Gannon hire after he was run out of town in Arizona. In an awkward kyle Murray situation at quarterback, working with a deficient overall roster, Gannon finished his tenure there with a 15-36 record over three seasons.

Whatever fans think about him as their new DC, the coaching staff has other notable questions. Not least of which concerns another atrocious special teams unit in 2025 under Rich Bisaccia. A significant portion of the fanbase won’t be satisfied until he is gone.
“Cool fire bisaccia already,” one Tweeter commented.
“Nobody is listening yo MLF. I have been watching the packers since I was born and as long as Biasacchi [sic] is on this team – then sundays will be spent in the river.”
Others took issue with LaFleur’s return as head coach. While it’s hard to imagine the Packers moving on from LaFleur to choose a new coach among a limited applicant pool this cycle, discontent is justified given his 3-6 playoff record in seven seasons. Despite the prospect of this roster returning Super Bowl contender status with good health – like it was most for most of 2025 until the injuries became too much – not everyone has an optimistic outlook.
“Matt is gone after another pathetic finish down the stretch!! 8-9 here we come!! Bear and Lions got better, Packers became pathetic!!”
“MLF doesn’t know the definition of “tremendous”. This is why he the head of a mediocre team. JG had exactly one good year with elite talent & still let the opponent comeback & win the SB. The median of his entire coaching career is underwater, Titanic underwater level.”
“MLF is deaf/blind to fans except the goodie-two shoe knob-polishers. There is a zero grace period to win a SB. 1265 being cheap for 16 years should be putting the weight of mediocracy on his shoulders. We aspire to a SB but the picture being painted is one of same-old, same-old.”

That’s not to say there weren’t some positive remarks sprinkled in, but the negative feedback tipped the scales considerably. While one might expect nothing else on a notoriously toxic platform like Twitter, the truth is that those dissatisfied cries won’t be going anywhere until the Packers get the job done in January.
