This Green Bay Packers team seems to be getting closer and closer as the weeks go by. When someone goes down with an injury the impact is felt throughout the locker room. That was on the full display today as Matt LaFleur took the podium. LaFleur was asked about Sammy Watkins and his road back playing on Sundays. His response was full of emotion. He began to describe how hard Watkins has been working to get healthy for this season.
Matt LaFleur discusses Watkins’ Injury
After being asked about Sammy Watkins’ injury, this is what the Packers head coach had to say:
“I feel awful about that, because I feel like we probably pushed our guys a little too hard in that regard, coming off a physical game, a night game. He’s done everything in his power to be in great shape, and he is in great shape.”
Matt LaFleur also said he’s reevaluating everything about practice workload after what he deemed “too many soft-tissue injuries.” He was asked if any of that relates to moving padded practice to Wednesday. He wouldn’t say yes, but definitely not no. “That’s definitely crossed my mind.”
This is a stark reminder that Matt LaFleur ALWAYS takes the blame for things that go wrong and ALWAYS gives the credit to others when things go right. Not most of the time. Always. Sammy Watkins has had a lengthy injury history throughout his career. It is likely that his own injury history played more of a role into his hamstring tightening up rather than the workload that didn’t seem to impact any other player. One thing is for certain though, the coaching staff will be doing everything they can do get Watkins back on the field after his IR stint. He certainly played a large role in the Packers’ victory vs the Bears in week two.
