Mason Crosby coming back to the Green Bay Packers in 2023 is not a certain thing at all. In fact, there are many who believe that the Packers would be better off moving on from the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. There is also the fact that Crosby is an unrestricted free agent that has many wondering if he will return to the Packers next season. On Wednesday morning, former Packers kicker and all-time leading scorer Ryan Longwell appeared on The Steve Czaban Show on 97.3 The Game and discussed whether or not Crosby should return in 2023.
Ryan Longwell Believes the Packers Should Bring Mason Crosby Back in 2023
One of the reasons that some people believe that the Packers should move on from Mason Crosby is because his leg has lost some of its strength. They point to the fact that his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks just 20.3% of the time compared to 62.0% in 2019. Ryan Longwell, however, does not think that the kickoff issue is that big of a deal. He had a great deal to say on the topic on The Steve Czaban Show:
“Well, I am a huge fan of Mason, as you can imagine. You know, I thought he was great this year. I mean, you know, that 56-yarder… I was there for the Vikings game, so I saw that go through. The 53-yarder that bounced. That was just a great kick, it’s just a tough time of year and conditions to get that to go through.
“You know, a big difference between this year and last year was that he had the same snapper and holder all through camp, all through the season, and I think he saw the ultimate accuracy that that brings. You get away with a lot more mistakes when you’re in the same rhythm with the same guys.
“Having said that, I don’t see there being any drop off in his accuracy going into next year if Pat [O’Donnell] and [Jack] Coco are back. And you know, I may be, well, I am extremely biased in this opinion, but I think that three points is FAR more valuable that a touchback kickoff.”
Longwell goes onto say that it is normal for kickers to lose their leg strength late in their career, and teams should not have to carry a fourth specialist just for kickoffs. However, he also believes that Crosby’s accuracy, all-but-guaranteeing three points late in drives, is far too valuable for the Packers to just let go. He suggests that, if the Packers want more touchbacks, they have Pat O’Donnell kick off. Longwell also states it will be important to keep O’Donnell as the holder and Jack Coco as the long-snapper.
Ryan Longwell discussed a bit more on the show, including who he believes is the greatest kicker of all time in the NFL. The full episode can be found in the link above.
