The Marquette Golden Eagles basketball team is having one of their finest seasons in program history. The veteran squad led by Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro boasts a 23-6 record. Marquette has nearly claimed the Big East regular season title, and now will face the conference tournament in the coming weeks. With their latest ranking at #6 in the nation, Marquette has reached their best position since 1978.

After a rough 2021-2022 season, the young Golden Eagles squad was bound to develop. The team finished with a 19-13 record last season and ended the season after a loss to North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament. A team composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores performed rather well together. Now, a group of sophomores and juniors, Marquette has made leaps as a unit to reach the point they are at.

Currently, the Marquette Golden Eagles are the sixth ranked school with a record of 23-6. Last week, following a loss to UConn and a win over Georgetown, Marquette came in at #10. The Golden Eagles have since defeated Xavier, Creighton, and DePaul to all but solidify themselves as #1 in the Big East standings. Marquette must still play Butler on February 28th and St. John’s on March 4th before the Big East tournament begins. A win will guarantee the Golden Eagles are the top seed.

    No finish line.

The last time the Marquette Golden Eagles reached this amount of success was their 1978-79 season. The highest ranking achieved in school history was done so in 1978 when the Golden Eagles were ranked ninth in the country. After receiving a third seed for the NCAA Tournament, Marquette beat the sixth seeded Pacific in the first round. In the following game, Marquette lost to the second seed, #6 DePaul.

What is Next for the Marquette Golden Eagles Basketball team?

This team has accomplished quite a lot so far this season. Despite breaking their school record, there is still a long road of accomplishments and battles ahead. The Golden Eagles will face their final two regular season match ups before the Big East tournament seeding begins. Given their 15-3 record in the Big East and competitive edge in conference games, Marquette is the favorite to win the tournament.

A conference tournament win would be huge for the Golden Eagles heading into March Madness and the NCAA Tournament. Marquette is currently given a 27% chance at a three seed for the NCAA tournament, according to Team Rankings. The play of the Marquette Golden Eagles in the conference tournament could dictate where they are seeded heading into the big dance.

For now, the focus for the team should be on finishing the regular season. A win will guarantee Marquette is atop the Big East standings, but two losses and two wins from Xavier could shake things up. The Golden Eagles should feel comfortable with where they are currently at.
