After a fantastic season that saw Marquette men’s basketball reach as high as 6th in the AP and 4th in the coaches poll, a key piece is on the way out. Junior forward Olivier-Maxence Prosper declared for the 2023 NBA Draft Tuesday via Instagram.
Olivier-Maxence Prosper Declares for the 2023 NBA Draft
Olivier-Maxence Prosper is far from a lock to be an early pick, making this decision interesting. He made big strides from his sophomore to junior season statistically. However, he was still third on the team in scoring without being a dominant rebounder.
The key part of the announcement is more about what it’s missing. A lot of players declare for the draft so they can go through the process and find out where they stand in the eyes of NBA front offices. That said, they almost always note that they are keeping their NCAA eligibility in case their draft situation isn’t as good as they hoped. Prosper left this out of his.
That very well could have been an oversight, but it’ll be interesting to see how his 2023 NBA Draft process goes. He may have to reconsider his decision if he becomes a second-round prospect at best. Forward Justin Lewis went this route last season and ended up undrafted. Although he has been signed to multiple two-way contracts, it’s definitely a risk. Time will tell how this plays out, but Olivier-Maxence Prosper leaving is a blow to a Marquette team with a high ceiling next season.
