Change is inevitable but it should always be for the better. That’s what Marquette Golden Eagles coaches Shaka Smart and Cara Consuegra are feeling right now amid the news of Mike Broeker getting named as the university’s new athletic director.
Smart and Consuegra, head coaches of the men’s and women’s basketball team, respectively, are bullish about the future of MU athletics in the hands of Broeker who replaced Bill Scholl.
“We definitely got the person that wants to be the AD at Marquette more than anyone else in the country,” Smart said during an interview with ESPN Milwaukee.

“And, again to the point of what I just said about wanting to do hard things or wanting to do your job, that’s a plus. That’s important.”
Broeker was the person behind the 2022 hiring of Smart who has won multiple Coach of the Year Awards in 2023.
Cara Consuegra praises Broeker’s passion
For Cara Consuegra, the hiring is perfect, not only because he has been with Marquette University in the last 21 years but more because he loves his job.
Broeker is involved in the re-signing of Consguera who spent years as women’s basketball coach before spending 13 years with Charlotte 49ers.
The women’s team coach said Broeker becoming an athletic’s director might be his calling.

What I told Kimo (Ah Yun, MU’s president) is that I want to work for somebody that (to them) this is more than just a job. Because for me, this is more than just a job. To come back here and be part of this community, it really means something to me.
And I believe the same thing about Mike Broeker. I believe this is his calling, to want to be here at Marquette. To help continue to elevate us, to do it within our mission and our values. That’s the type of leader I wanted to work for.
