Marquette basketball is unlike most other programs in the nation, particularly when it comes to acquiring talents via the now ubiquitous transfer portal.
In fact, as pointed out by Steve Lappas of CBS Sports during Tuesday night’s pregame interview with Golden Eagles head coach Shaka Smart, Marquette is the only high-major program since the 2022-23 season that has not added a player via the portal.
“We just love our guys,” Smart said when asked about that stance by Marquette basketball. “And we feel like if we’re truly invested in relationships, growth, and victory with them, that’s a partnership. You know, I tell the guys all the time, we equals me plus you. So when you bring in another variable, another element, then that impacts that. And obviously, a game like tonight (versus the Georgetown Hoyas), we’ve got to deal with some really, really good transfers. But we’ve just chosen to try to grow our guys up from within. To this point, it’s worked out pretty well, but nothing’s promised.
Marquette basketball having success without relying on transfer portal
Marquette basketball clearly feels confident in riding with its holdovers from the previous season. Seniors Kam Jones, Stevie Mitchell, David Joplin and juniors Chase Ross and Ben Gold are all playing big roles in the Golden Eagles’ success this season.
Marquette improved to 14-2 overall and 5-0 in Big East play after defeating the Hoyas at home, 74-66, with Ross leading the attack with his game-high 27 points.
