Marquette basketball entered Tuesday’s matchup treading water. The Marquette Golden Eagles had yet to win a game in February when they housed the unranked DePaul Blue Demons in an early week contest. Riding a three-game losing streak, Marquette extinguished their foes 68-58, holding them to just 4-of-24 from deep and more than doubling them up on the offensive glass. However, it wasn’t a blemish-free game from the Big East power, with the Golden Eagles posting a 37/16/70 shooting slash line against a DePaul team with a 2-12 conference record.
Offensively, the bench production was hit-or-miss, with Zaide Lowery and Damarius Owens coming for 0-of-6 from the field. Marquette basketball also turned it over 12 times and had a horrid day shooting from beyond the arc. Unsurprisingly, superstar guard Kam Jones picked up the slack for the team, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists, extending his streak of double-digit scoring games to 41 games. Following the game, head coach Shaka Smart showered Jones with praise.
Marquette Basketball HC Applauds Kam Jones

According to Jake Dale of the Marquette Wire Sports:
“I don’t know if I have ever coached a guy who loves his school more than Kam Jones.” -Shaka Smart on Kam Jones becoming the third all-time scorer for Marquette #MUBB.
On Tuesday, Marquette basketball leaned heavily on superstar guard Kam Jones. An All-Big East member in 2022, Jones scored a game-high 19 points on 50% shooting in a 68-58 win over the DePaul Blue Demons. Marquette entered desperate for a win, starting February 0-3 and falling to 18th in the AP Poll. Jones becomes the third all-time leading scorer in Marquette basketball history with the performance, passing Lazar Hayward with 1,870. Jones is 115 points off Jerel McNeal for second all-time regarding career scoring.
However, Jones will have a tough time catching Marquette’s all-time leading scorer, guard Markus Howard. From 2016 to 2020, Howard scored 2,761 points despite his senior season being cut short due to COVID-19. Jones scored 19.2 points per game this season, while Howard averaged 27.8 points per game as a senior.
Marquette Hosts Seton Hall Next Saturday

Marquette basketball will not play this weekend but will enjoy a seven-day absence between games. Next Tuesday, Marquette will host the Seton Hall Pirates, the worst team in the Big East regarding overall (6-18) and conference record (1-12). Marquette beat Seton Hall earlier this year, 76-59. Kam Jones scored 19, while Ben Gold went 3-of-5 from deep. With Tuesday’s win over DePaul, the Golden Eagles remain three games back of St. John’s for the top spot in the Big East standings.
