No. 9 Marquette basketball came away with a thrilling 72-70 win on the road over the Xavier Musketeers on Saturday, and they probably would not have done it without the huge performance of senior forward David Joplin.
Against the Musketeers, Joplin chipped in a total of 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, including two 3-pointers on six attempts from behind the arc. He also had five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist in 36 minutes of action.
The win over Xavier meant more to Joplin than just another game for Marquette basketball. After all, he managed to hit a personal milestone contest, as he is now a 1,000-point scorer in Marquette uniform. He needed six points to reach that scoring plateau entering the Musketeers game, and he reached that with his first field goal attempt in the second half.
Marquette basketball head coach Shaka Smart on David Joplin’s milestone
Marquette head coach Shaka Smart talked about Joplin’s personal achievement following the game.
“Any time you have someone that’s scored over 1,000 points at the same school, you’re just grateful that he’s been around that long,” Smart said (h/t Ben Steele of the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). “And we got two-thirds of our season left with him.”
So far in the 2024-25 college basketball season, Joplin is averaging 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
The win against Xavier was Marquette’s 11th this season overall and second in conference play. The Golden Eagles can keep it going on Tuesday when they share the floor with the Providence Friars on the road.
