No. 9 Marquette basketball got a mention from No. 11 UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley on Wednesday following the reigning two-time national champions’ thrilling 94-89 overtime victory over the Xavier Musketeers.
Hurley gave props to Sean Miller’s squad by also comparing the Musketeers to the Golden Eagles, who also scored a win on Wednesday over the Butler Bulldogs via an 80-70 score.
“Obviously, huge credit to Xavier. It speaks to their program’s quality. I talk about Marquette and their excellence, obviously I feel the same way about the Xavier program with its history. Their effort tonight was incredible,” Hurley said after the game (h/t college basketball writer Jaden Daly)
The win over Xavier was UConn’s first in Big East play in the 2024-25 college basketball season. It was also the Huskies’ fifth in a row following their shocking debacle in Maui, where Hurley’s squad lost three consecutive games.
Marquette basketball’s recent form
Marquette basketball, meanwhile, has been on an up-and-down adventure of late, having gone 2-2 in their last four outings, a stretch that includes a win against then-No. 11 Wisconsin Badgers and losses to the then-No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones and unranked Dayton Flyers.
Hurley and the Huskies will see Marquette basketball on the court on Feb. 1 and on Mar. 5.
