Luke Musgrave was one of two second-round picks for the Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Green Bay Packers have a totally new and young tight end room entering the 2023 season. Musgrave is excited to get his rookie season going with Green Bay after having his season shortened a season ago with the Oregon State Beavers.
He is only 23 years old and hopes to be a part of this team for the next several years. The other rookie tight end the Packers have, along with Luke Musgrave, is Tucker Kraft, who was a third-round pick from South Dakota State. Musgrave spoke to Wes Hodkiewicz, a senior writer for Packers.com, about the upcoming season.
“I’m really excited. I don’t know if I’ve ever been this excited for football.”
It is possible that Luke Musgrave could see a lot of targets this weekend, especially if Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs are out due to hamstring injuries. A quarterback’s best friend is a reliable tight end. Quarterback Jordan Love could target him a lot this season. He is 6’6″ and weighs 253 lbs.
Assuming Musgrave starts this weekend for Green Bay, he will be the fourth tight end of the last 33 years to start as a rookie at the position. The most recent was in 2020 with Josiah Deguara. The other two that have happened in the last 33 years were Richard Rodgers in 2014 and Jackie Harris in 1990.
During the preseason, Luke Musgrave had five receptions and played 75 snaps. He will see way more usage during the regular season. Musgrave also told Hodkiewicz:
“Tight end is a hard position because you gotta know the pass game and the run game as well as a lot of protection games. I know I’m going to go out there and prepare hard like I always do, and try to put my best foot forward and try to make some plays and help the offense in any way I can, whether that be getting a run block, getting a pass block, or catching. I don’t care as long as I’m out there contributing.”
Luke Musgrave Replacing Two Former Packers On the Roster and Looking to Make History This Season
Musgrave, entering the 2023 season, is one of two new tight ends on the roster, along with Kraft. Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan were both on the Packers’ roster a season ago and are now on the Bears’ roster for the 2023 season. That will be interesting to see how that plays out this weekend.
More importantly, Musgrave is looking to have a solid campaign as a rookie. He could very well have over 500 receiving yards as a rookie tight end, and that is something that hasn’t happened in franchise history for this position. The most productive tight end in franchise history was Bubba Franks, who was a first-round pick in 2000 and had 34 receptions for 363 yards receiving and one touchdown that season as a rookie.
