Luke Fickell’ success with his previous team is among major reasons why he was hired by the Wisconsin Badgers to replace Paul Chryst.

The 51-year-old head coach came to University of Wisconsin in 2022 after his successful stint as the head coach of Cincinnati Bearcats.
His best year with the team was in 2021 when he won the Sporting News College Football Coach of the Year, Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year, Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, and three other COY awards.
What left a greater mark for many though was the 2019 year, his third year with the team. This is because it was that year that things felt real for Bearcats fans.
They recorded nine straight wins and eventually won the Birmingham Bowl over Boston College.

Now, some Badgers fans and critics are keeping their fingers crossed that he will be able to do the same for the team.
However, he thinks things are different now compared to before.
Luke Fickell previews Year 3 and Cincinnati comparisons
Fickell did not deny that he was trying to do with Badgers what he did with Cincinnati in his first two years.
Last season, however, was historically bad for the team as Wisconsin failed to reach a Bowl game for the first time since 2001. Fickell’s head is wanted by fans.
He does not see the similarity between his third year for the Badgers and his 3rd year with the Bearcats. He is not making the same approach.

And I think going into Year 3 was the first time we recognized like, OK, there’s some things that we have to do different, whether it’s a little bit more schematically, whether it’s truly size-wise defensively, which we recognized that we really had to do. And so, to start the offseason, it wasn’t just, “OK, you don’t have a bowl game and things like that.” It was like, “OK, first let’s have some really deep conversations, because there’s going to have to be some changes made.”
