In the Brewers second game of Cactus League play, Luis Urias exited with an injury. The injury occurred when he was heading to third base following a double by Pedro Severino. Today, Craig Counsell provided more a time frame as to how long Urias may be out.
Luis Urías is to undergo further testing today on his left quad injury but the Brewers expect him to be down a minimum of two weeks.
Craig Counsell: “I think Opening Day is questionable, is what I’d say.”

With the new schedule, opening day is now set for April 7th. If Urias is shut down for the minimum two weeks as indicated, that would bring us to April 3rd. Hopefully the injury will not keep him sidelined further, but this early in the season if there was any reason that Urias would need to take more time off it would be best to do it now.
How may Urias’s injury impact the team if he is out long term?
After a great 2021 offensive season, Luis Urias carved out a path to become the Brewers everyday third basemen. Reports then indicated that he reported to camp in improved physical shape. Coming off of a 23 run home run and 75 RBI season, expectations are high for him this season.
The hope is that he does not have to miss a substantial part of the regular season. If he does miss time, Jace Peterson and Mike Brosseau likely will replace him and may even platoon at third base. Peterson is out of minor league options, so Urias’s injury may keep him in the big leagues. Brosseau was brought over via trade during the off-season with the expectation of serving in a utility role. so he too has experience playing third base.
One area that may get overlooked should Urias’s injury linger longer than expected would be shortstop depth. Willy Adames is obviously the everyday player at that position, but Urias would be the next best choice/backup should anything happen to Adames. There is not a great everyday option should both Adames and Urias be out simultaneously. Hopefully this is a scenario that we do not have to endure.
