At the start of the season, many Green Bay Packers fans were wondering if Tucker Kraft or Luke Musgrave was going to emerge as the number one tight end on this football team. There was a possibility that Musgrave and Kraft were going to be useful in two tight-end sets.
However. Musgrave has been injured for most of the season and Kraft has emerged as the number one tight end in the Packers offense. Tucker Kraft this season has caught 41 passes for 555 yards receiving and seven touchdowns, along with averaging 13.5 yards per catch. He also has been targeted 56 times this season.
Green Bay Packers Fan Asks Matt Schneidman Of The Athletic About Tucker Kraft And Other Skill Players Who Will Earn A Second Contract
For now, the Packers do not have to pay its wide receivers or tight ends. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst will have to pay some of its wide receivers and tight ends to new deals. A fan asked Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:
“What do you think is the future of this Packers receiving corps? If we count Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and Tucker Kraft as the main guys, is it tenable to continue with never having a true No. 1? If the Packers move on from someone, who should/will it be?”
A lot of Green Bay fans are wondering about this topic themselves. Schneidman answered:
“It’s absolutely tenable not having a clear-cut No. 1 receiver. The Packers still don’t and they’re 10-4. They’re going to have to pay a couple of those guys at some point. They probably won’t be able to keep all of them. Kraft has already locked in a second contract, in my opinion, as he’s proven to be the future at tight end. Let’s say they decide to only pay two of the four receivers. Right now, I’d go Reed and Doubs, with Doubs edging out Watson by the slimmest of margins. Reed is their most versatile offensive player and to me, Doubs is more consistently reliable on third down and in the red zone than Watson. The latter serves a vital role on the team and has been playing great in recent weeks — LaFleur said Tuesday, “in every phase of the game, he’s been A-plus” — so maybe the Packers find a way to pay all three.”
It will be interesting to see who else gets a contract other than Tucker Kraft. It would be a shock at this point for Kraft not to get a second contract with the team. Outside of his receiving game, he is a very good blocker as well. He was a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft from the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
Wide Receivers
Schneidman is most likely correct that along with Kraft, Jayden Reed, and Romeo Doubs will be the other wide receivers to be paid. Would Christian Watson be traded at some point or would he stay with the Packers on a cheap contract? Dontayvion Wicks hasn’t proven to himself this season that he will earn a second contract with Green Bay.
It will be intriguing to see what decisions general manager Brian Gutekunst will make down the road. The good news is that quarterback Jordan Love is already locked up to a long-term deal.
