The Milwaukee Brewers finished up a stretch of 18 games in 17 days with a 6-4 loss at home to the San Diego Padres. Despite numerous injuries to both position players and pitchers, the Brewers were able to go 9-9 during this marathon stretch of games. Even though Sunday’s game ended in a loss, two Brewers players were able to put their names in both team and league record books.

Kolten Wong Hit Two Home Runs, Moves Up a Brewers All-Time List

Kolten Wong is not having his best season at the plate. The Brewers second baseman is hitting just .229/.322/.392 on the season. These are well below his career numbers of .260/.333/.391. One thing he has been adept at this year, though, is hitting leadoff home runs. Wong got the Brewers on the board in the first inning with a solo home run.

The home run moved Wong into third place on the Brewers’ all-time list for leadoff home runs.

With his homer today, @KoltenWong ties Don Money for third in franchise history in leadoff homers:

    Paul Molitor – 33
    Rickie Weeks – 26
    Don Money – 10
    Kolten Wong – 10
    Corey Hart – 9#ThisIsMyCrew

    — Mike Vassallo (@MikeVassallo13) June 5, 2022

It is worth noting that of all the players on this list, Wong has played the fewest games as a Brewers, by far.

    • Paul Molitor- 1,856 games
    • Rickie Weeks- 1,142 games
    • Don Money- 1,196 games
    • Kolten Wong- 166 games
    • Corey Hart- 945 games

With the Brewers trailing 3-1 in the eighth inning, it was Kolten Wong who tied the game with a two-run blast.

Overall, Wong was 2-5 on the day with the two home runs and three RBI.

    Jace Peterson’s Web Gem

With the Brewers leading the game 1-0 in the third inning, San Diego Padre’s left field Jurickson Profar hit a sharp grounder down the line at third. Peterson made the diving stop and threw him out at first, saving a run.

The steady defense on this play was the only bright spot on the day for both Peterson and Rowdy Tellez. The pair combined to go 0-9 with four strikeouts.

Josh Hader Ties the Record For Most Consecutive Scoreless Appearances

With the game tied in the ninth inning, Craig Counsell elected to send out his closer, Josh Hader, to keep the Padres at bay. It worked, as Hader threw 15 pitches to send the Padres down in order. It was his 40th consecutive appearance without allowing a run, tying the Major League record.

Josh Hader has tied the MLB record for most consecutive scoreless appearances with 40 in a row. Seems like there's a new mark being set with him every time he takes the mound.

    Remarkable.

    — Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) June 5, 2022

The decision to use Josh Hader, though, did bring one record to an end. Hader had recorded a save in each of his first 18 appearances of the season, which stands as the Major League record.

Andrew McCutchen Drives in a Late Run

Andrew McCutchen ended a 0-32 slump with his walk-off single on Thursday night. On Sunday, McCutchen went 3-5 with with a late RBI. With the Brewers trailing 6-3 in the 10th inning, McCutchen singled home Tyrone Taylor to cut the lead to 6-4. Unfortunately, Milwaukee could not rally any further than that.

    Game Notes

    • Eric Lauer pitched six strong innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
    • Trevor Gott earned the loss by surrendering a three-run home run to Jake Cronenworth in the 10th.
    • Pablo Reyes was 2-4 with a run scored. He is hitting .300/.364/.300 with the Brewers.
    • Brad Boxberger and Devin Williams each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
    • Christian Yelich is in a 0-14 slump. He has yet to record a hit in four games this month.
    • The Brewers and Padres will not face each other again during the 2022 regular season. The Padres won the season series 4-3.

    Up Next

The Brewers have a much needed day off on Monday. On Tuesday, Jason Alexander (0-0, 2.57) will make his second career start. The Brewers will be facing the Philadelphia Phillies and Ranger Suarez (4-3, 4.69 ERA). Philadelphia has won four games in a row.
