The Wisconsin volleyball team has begun their season, and already has quite the test coming up against a tough Louisville squad.
The Badgers will travel down to Louisville, Kentucky to take on the #6-ranked Louisville Cardinals squad in a nationally televised game on ESPN2. Louisville will kickoff their season against the Badgers while Wisconsin will fly into the game having a 3-0 win over the Bradley Braves under their belt. Wisconsin is coming off of a 30-4 season last year and aims to prove themselves early on against a talented Cardinals team.
Wisconsin Volleyball Traveling to Louisville to Take Down Tough Cardinals Team
The Wisconsin Badgers volleyball team will travel to Louisville to truly kickoff the season against one of the top-ranked schools in the country. The Louisville Cardinals volleyball team enters play ranked as the sixth school in the country and boast a talented veteran roster. Louisville finished 27-5 last season, and while they missed out on postseason play, they finished the season with a 16-1 home record.
The one thing the Cardinals truly excelled at last season was defending their home court and bringing plenty of energy to their games. Wisconsin is entering dangerous territory, and will surely be in for a tough fight both on the court and in the stands. Louisville is known for filling the stadium and coming out in numbers to support their squad.
Wisconsin is no stranger to packed environments, with their home court in Madison being a hot spot for some of the best collegiate volleyball crowds. In order to walk away from Kentucky with a win over Louisville, the Wisconsin volleyball team will need to slow down the premier players on the Cardinals team.
Wisconsin Badgers Volleyball Must Slow Down Top Scorers Luper, DeBeer
The Cardinals have two players in particular who are serious scorers and attackers for their team, starting with outside hitter Anna DeBeer. DeBeer is an experienced player, entering her final year of eligibility after accomplishing quite a lot with the Cardinals. DeBeer recorded 18 matches last season with double-digits kills and ended the year with over 300 total kills, leading the team.
DeBeer has been a member of Louisville for some time and has had the chance to play in the NCAA Tournament with the team as well. The outside hitter faced off against Wisconsin in the tournament in 2021 and recorded 20 kills against the Badgers defense.
Alongside DeBeer is the second-highest scorer on the team, former transfer outside hitter Charitie Luper. Luper began her collegiate career with UCLA before transferring last season to Louisville, taking over a starting spot from one of their graduates. Luper immediately made an impact recording 344 kills and 27 service aces for her team.
The Wisconsin volleyball team will need to find a way to slow down DeBeer and Luper in order to defeat the Cardinals. Both attackers are skilled and also bring plenty of power to their shots and service attempts.
Wisconsin Badgers Volleyball Needs to Find a Way Around Glock
Perhaps the best player on the Louisville roster is setter Elle Glock, who recorded 1130 assists last season and also had 19 service aces. Glock is a playmaker and whether she is scoring herself or putting her teammates in a perfect position to score, the setter is dangerous on the court. Glock recorded a season-high 60 assists against Pittsburgh last season and proved just how accurate of a passer she can be.
If the Wisconsin volleyball team can find a way around Glock, or at least a way to prevent her from consistently touching the ball, then the Badgers could seriously slow down the Louisville attack.
