Before Tuesday’s game, Brewers’ closer Josh Hader had a streak of 40 consecutive scoreless innings. However, after surrendering two home runs in the 9th inning to the Philadelphia Phillies, that streak is now over.
Hader began the 2022 season with a potentially record-breaking pace. Continuing off of his dominance at the end of the 2021 regular season, Hader had been solidifying himself as the top reliever in all of baseball. He had matched Houston Astros reliever Ryan Pressly for the longest such stretch in MLB history.
Tuesday’s loss was Hader’s first blown save since July 7, 2021, against the New York Mets. MLB’s longest active streak at 32 consecutive converted saves has now been snapped. When asked about the streak, Hader said “The scoreless streak, that was pretty cool, I was hoping to get another one, but it’s baseball. It’ll keep you honest.”
Going into the 9th inning, the Brewers held a 2-1 lead. The Brewers then handed the game to its All-Star closer, who hadn’t surrendered a run in 19 previous appearances this year. Phillies’ third baseman Alec Bohm blasted a leadoff home run, and then two batters later, Matt Vierling, took Hader deep to put the Phillies in front. It was in Vierling’s first major league at-bat since May 10.
Following Milwaukee’s loss to Philadelphia, the Brewers are now 33-24 and they are currently on a four-game losing streak. On the flip side, the Phillies are now 26-29 and are 4-0 since they fired their manager Joe Girardi last Friday.
Although opposing batters finally got to Hader, there isn’t much to be concerned about regarding the Brewers’ closer. His dominance over his last 40 relief outings has shown that he’s the best closer in all of baseball. Hader and the Brewers will finish their homestand with two more games against the Phillies before heading to Washington to begin a nine-game road trip.
