The Jordan Love contract gives the Packers some protection for the future
The Green Bay Packers have made their decision on quarterback Jordan Love and his fifth-year option.
Instead of picking up the option which would have cost $20.77 million, the Packers agreed to a new deal with Love that is worth up to $22.5 million with $13.5M fully guaranteed. The deal may seem like it’s less for Love but it gives not only the Packers, but the quarterback some protection too.
It’s essentially a bridge deal that can pay him more than the fifth-year option would have. And most important, the protection for the team and the upside for Love.
Jordan Love's 5th-year option value was for $20.272M, fully guaranteed.
Rather than picking that up, Green Bay gives Love a chance at more upside, with a bit of protection for the team with less guaranteed money.

The news comes just hours ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for the fifth-year option and makes Green Bay’s plan clear. The Packers want Love to prove he is the guy to replace Aaron Rodgers and if he is, he can earn a larger contract after the season.
However, if it doesn’t work out, Green Bay is not on the hook for a big contract and can reset the quarterback clock again.
