The Milwaukee Brewers drafted Joey Wiemer in the fourth round during the 2020 MLB draft. The Cincinnati products highest graded tool at that time was his throwing arm, but he also displayed quite a bit of raw power that he had not quite fully tapped into at the collegiate level yet. Over the past two seasons, Wiemer has ascended up prospect rankings in large part to his power being on full display. However, he has additional elements to his game as well and he was just one of five total minor league players in 2022 to accomplish a significant stat line.
In 2022, Joey Wiemer was one of five MiLB players to hit 30 doubles, 20 home runs, and have 30 stolen bases.
While getting ready for 2023, I’m still doing some house keeping on 2022 and came across this.
Joey Wiemer was one of just five players in MiLB with at least 30 doubles, 20 HR and 30 SB in 2022.
The others?
Elly De La Cruz
Anthony Volpe
Wynton Bernard
Brewer Hicklen— Garrett Greene (@Garrett_Greene) January 25, 2023
In 2022, Wiemer played for both the Brewers Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. He played 84 games in Biloxi (Double-A) and 43 in Nashville (Triple-A). All together he had a .256/.336/.465 slash with 21 home runs, 34 doubles, and 31 stolen bases.
Crazy enough, Wiemer just missed accomplishing this same feat in 2021. During his first full minor league season, Wiemer belted 27 home runs, stole 30 bases, and had 18 doubles. That year he played at both the Low-A and High-A levels.
A 30 double, 20 home run, and 30 stolen base season is quite the accomplishment. Of the other players mentioned, Elly De La Cruz and Anthony Volpe are top prospects in their respective organizations. Brewer Hicklen is the 16th ranked prospect in the Royals system. Lastly, Wynton Bernard, a 10 year minor league veteran, put together an incredible 2022 season that most recently has earned him an invite to spring training with the Blue Jays.
Hopefully Wiemer can continue to ascend and put together great seasons. It’s possible that Wiemer makes his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2023. He does have some stiff competition ahead of him in which they may get opportunities before him. This includes prospects Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick.
