Jackson Chourio has had a rough go of things defensively over the past four days. The young star has been playing center field since Garrett Mitchell went out with an oblique injury. Unfortunately a pair of slip ups by him have proved costly for the Brewers.
Against the Tampa Bay Rays, Jackson Chourio committed his first career error

On May 9, Chourio committed his first career error. Playing center field, a routine ground ball went underneath his glove, the baseball went to the wall, and a Rays runner scored as a result. Milwaukee went on to lose this game by a run and Chourio’s defensive misplay proved to be the difference.

In Cleveland, three runners scored on a fly ball that had a 95% catch probability

Against the Guardians on May 12, Chourio misplayed a fly ball that led to three Guardians scoring. Chourio took a bad angle/route and was unable to make the catch despite it having a 95% catch probability. This play was a huge turning point in the game as starter Freddy Peralta was just one out away from escaping a bases loaded jam before Chourio’s lapse.

At this point, it’s unclear how long the Brewers will give Chourio to adjust in center field. These growing pains that come with an inexperienced player are playing roles in losses. Given the fact Chourio previously excelled in the corner outfield positions, it may be time to move Sal Frelick back to center field.
