To say Preston Smith has had a bounce back year would be an understatement. After struggling in 2020 many thought he might be a cap casualty. However, Preston Smith took a pay cut and took a heavily incentive based contract. Throughout the year he’s hit most of his benchmarks. With Za’Darius Smith missing the season the Packers needed Smith to step up along side Rashan Gary. Here are the details on the incentives he could’ve made going into the season.
What Preston Needs in Week 18
Going into a meaningless game in week 18 Preston Smith has 9.0 sacks. That mean he has already made 1.25 million dollars on sack based incentives. His next sack would bring his total to 10.0 and cash in another 750K. One sack for Preston against a struggling Lions team seems likely considering how he’s played this year. However, If Preston has an amazing game and can come up with three sacks then he would make another 1.2 million dollars. Three sacks seems like a lot but it’s not impossible. Preston Smith has two such outings in his career already. He did it once playing in Washington and once against Denver as a Packer.
The Packers have gotten a lot of production out of Preston Smith this year and will need it to continue into the playoffs. With Za’Darius Smith potentially coming back, Preston might even see some easier matchups in the most important games.
