In the 2022 MLB season, the Milwaukee Brewers did not hit a home run in 49 games. Their record in those homerless games was 19-30, a winning percentage of .388. In the games where they did hit at least one home run, the Crew was 67-46, a .593 winning percentage, a difference of more than 200 percentage points. That .593 winning percentage would have translated to about 96 wins, good enough for a N.L. Central title last season.
The Brewers last season finished the year with 219 HRs, third-most in the majors behind the Yankees (254) and the Braves (243). During Craig Counsell’s tenure with the team as manager (since 2015), the Brewers have been one of the majors top HR-hitting teams. Since 2015, the Brewers are one of only seven MLB teams to have 1,500 or more home runs. They have 1,519 homers from 2015-22, good enough for seventh most in baseball in that timeframe.
Detailed win-loss record for 2022 Brewers based on home runs per game
Here is a detailed look at how well the 2022 Brewers played in games where they had from zero to six home runs in a game.
0 HRs: 49 games, 19-30 record, .388 winning percentage
1 HR: 45 games, 19-26 record, .422 winning percentage
2 HRs: 41 games, 26-15 record, .634 winning percentage
3 HRs: 22 games, 18-4 record, .818 winning percentage
4 HRs: 1 game, 1-0 record, 1.000 winning percentage
5 or more HRs: 4 games, 3-1 record, .750 winning percentage
We can break the above numbers down even a little further. In games last season when the Brewers had zero or only one home run, the team was 38-56, a .404 winning percentage. In games with two or more home runs, their record was 48-20, a .706 winning percentage. That’s a difference of over 300 percentage points.
Brewers were 22-5 last season in games where they hit three or more homers
The Brewers had a 22-5 record in games where they hit three or more home runs, an .815 winning percentage. The 27 games with three or more home runs was the third most in the league last year.
It’s anyone’s guess how the home run will define the 2023 team. They lost Hunter Renfroe and Kolten Wong who accounted for 44 HRs, and there is no word on the 2023 status of free agent Andrew McCutchen, who had 17 homers as a Brewer in 2022. The “X” factor is what the younger players expected to get more playing time with contribute via the long ball, and what newly-acquired slugger Jess Winker will add.
